- In March 1986 the Centre organized an exhibition on the
teaching activities of the four founder member
Universities: "Urban Architecture - Teaching
Experiences". This exhibition was requested by
other European Universities: in particular, a summarized
version was invited to the World Congress of UIA, in
Brighton in July 1987. The catalogue, in three languages,
was widely distributed and publicized the activities of

- In September 1986, in the Aula Magna of the University
of Florence, the first Congress on a specific topic that
the Centre organizes yearly took place. The Congress,
"The identity of the Urban Environment - Teaching
Experiences of Urban Design", was accompanied by
an exhibition on the same topic and hosted about fifty
speakers from more than twenty European Universities. It
offered the possibility to compare different and
complementary cultural realities and to gain an overview
of the state of studies in the field and the methods used
in teaching. The Congress Proceedings, including the
Catalogue of the Exhibition, in the three official
languages (Italian, English and French), were published
and distributed through the book trade in Europe and the
United States in July 1987.. Return to the list

- In September 1987 the second Congress took place:
"The Construction of the Urban Place - Methods
and Instruments"; it was divided into three
daylong sessions on specific topics, with ten official
papers and about twenty shorter reports on the various
subjects. The Congress and the Exhibition held at the
same time allowed for an exchange of information on the
theoretical foundations, on the methods and procedures
used in different European countries in urban design.
Speakers from more than twenty European Universities took
an active part in this Congress. The Congress
Proceedings, including the Catalogue of the Exhibition,
in Italian and English, were published in September 1988. Return to the list

- In September 1988 the third Conference took place,
"The city tomorrow - Urban changes in Europe",
which has dealt with the actual practice of design, and
in particular with a few important examples at present
being carried out in several European countries (the
Business District of Naples, the projects for East Paris,
the renewal of Glasgow inner-city, the London Docklands,
the Globe Arena in Stockholm). An Exhibition on the same
topics has been organized as well. The proceedings are in

- In October 1989 the fourth Congress, "Urban
project in Europe: diversity and continuity",
took place in Strasbourg and has been guest of the
Council of Europe; its main topics were:
a - "Principles
and objectives of Urban Design in Europe";
b - "Research,
training, cooperation in Europe on Urban
Design";
c - "The tools of
Urban Design".

- In September 1990 the fifth Congress, "Urban
Edges", has taken place in Glasgow, as an event
of "Glasgow European City of Culture". It has
been developed through theoretical papers, illustration
of significant examples, and workshops about some urban
problems of the city of Glasgow. Return to the list

- In January 1991 an Exhibition on the final works on
Urban Design ("The European city")
developed in the most important European Universities has

- In October 1991 the seminar "Urban Strategies
for the future territory" has been held at the
Istituto Universitario Europeo di Fiesole, as a
preparation of the 1992 conference Six groups have
pointed out the bases for the "Charter of the city
of the future", to be presented at the 1992

- In October 1992 the conference "The European
Charter for the city of the future" has
presented a technical-political document for the

- Settembre 1994 - Bruxelles Institut Supérieur
d’Architecture de St Luc. Seminar "Teaching
Urban Design through the project". Presentation
of students works developed at Naples, Milan, Florence,
Strasbourg, Bruxelles, Birmingham. Students and teachers
have been discussing problems and teaching processes
related to these works with reference to the general
policies of their countries. A video able to synthetise
the main moments of the seminar is planned for September

- November 1994 - Rouen, Institut Européen
d’Aménagement et d’Architecture On November 24th and 25th this
event was held according to the following points:
- presentation of the
European Charter for the city;
- exhibition of the final
works of the European Schools of Architecture (already
presented at Florence, Udine, Turin, Stuttgart, and in
the following months at Weimar and Bruxelles);
- meeting and discussion
about "The situation of Rouen related to the
subjects of the Charter".

Strasbourg - Birmingham - Dunkerque Seminar "Urban regeneration
in Birmingham and Dunkerque. The role of the project
towards the relationships between public administrations
and private entrepreneurs" This work is inserted
in the joint research of the Schools of Birmingham and
Strasbourg for the programme "Euroconception"
of the French "Ministère de
l’Equipement". Comparisons with other urban
institutions to which members of the Centre are working
will be done (Sarajevo, IMG Eurocités, IBA Emschertal in
Germany).
